Surface Stuff

Now that Surfaces are going out, I have a couple of things which I think make it more usable. If you like any of these things, send your opinions through whatever channels that you think might have some influence. The stuff that I am doing is more demonstration than anything else. Nothing would please me more thant to see these things adopted, making my versions obsolete.

I do not think that loading any of these files violates the prohibition against loading unauthorized apps. The break calculator is simply an Excel spreadsheet that runs in Excel which is pre-installed. The other files are simply web pages saved on the device for use while offline.

There are formal EFB feedback mechanisms on the EFB page on DeltaNet. Also consider e-mailing the Delta IT Committee at DALPATech@alpa.org. Additionally, consider informal feedback mechanisms by expressing your opinions to your chief pilot, line check airman, etc.

Showing alternate airports in Jepp FD

One of the things that I like about Google Earth is the ability to show alternates from the airway manual. The Surface will not run Google Earth. This file allows you to filter and then paste nearby alternates into Jepp FD so that you can see where they are on the map. Ultimately, it would be desirable to have this in Jepp FD, but this is offered as interim solution.

I have recently updated the code so that just going to the page while on your Surface should load the page into the browser cache so that it is available offline. Make a shortcut on your your start menu so that you can reload it, even offline. I have more information and pictures in the instructions file.

Creating an Industry Standard for Map Overlays

I'm reaching a little overhead, but I wanted to get the conversation started on a kml like schema for creating map overlays in aviation applications:

Aviation App User Overlays

Other files

note: I am in the process of making these pages save to the browser cache automatically. I have already done this with the Jepp FD alternates. The first link will describe how to save these other files to your Surface.

Radar

I do not think that I am unique in wanting to see inflight radar available on the EFB. In the meantime, MyRadar is available for the Surface for strategic preflight when you have WiFi. Remember the prohibition against unapproved applications, but you can install this on your personal side.

Swipe up and you can get to the layers where you can use the aviation layers to look up a flight.
