ForeFlight offers the ability to load the route via link which can also be encoded as a QR code. Jeppesen should provide this. This provides several examples to demonstrate the concept.
The second purpose of this page is to demonstrate some comparison examples of ForeFlight with Flight Weather Viewer in the context of convective information. If you have an iPad, click on the link and then play with the satellite, radar, and lightining overlays. If you do not have an iPad, I have added links to SkyVector. Click on "Layers" in the upper right. It is interesting to compare the satellite and radar where radar is available. Where radar is unavailable, I think the satellite information is interesting. I wish that SkyVector had lighting also. Note that the SkyVector satellite information comes from BCI.
ForeFlight allows the importing of KML files. I have used this to create alternate lists for each fleet. Contact me at thejohnbell@gmail.com if you want these files. Oceanic flights have Equal Time Points (ETP) and associated alternates. For these flights, I create a kml file that can be loaded into ForeFlight.
- To open these files: tap on the link for the ETOPS kml file and choose to open it in ForeFlight
- To view the information: Choose the option from the map layers. It is at the bottom below "Fuel: Jet A."
- To delete the information on the iPad: More -> User Content -> User Map Layers
- To delete the information on the iPhone: Menu -> User Content -> User Map Layers
